2000 9-3. AC Compressor Bearing Failing. NEED HELP!

I took my 2000 9-3 (115k miels) into the mechanic this morning after hearing a scraping/groaning noise coming from under the hood.
My mechanic has told me that a bearing in the AC Compressor is near failure and as a result the entire Compressor unit needs to be replaced.
His estimate was as follows:
890.00 - New AC compressor
160.00- New filters
119.00 Flush old Frion from the AC system
360.00 - Labor
After some googling, 890.00 seems like a lot for the part.
Anyone have thoughts on this or whether there is a way for this bearing can be replaced without having to replace the entire unit? (My mechanic says no)
Thanks in advance for your help
