Re: 1997 Saab SE Turbo hatchback 2.0 engine
Does one have to do a system read when the Check Engine Light is on ? Or can you still get a reading based on the last occurrence of a CEK?
What I mean is that I had a check engine light happen today. It is no longer active. can I still get a reading as to what the CEL was all about??
Background: Yesterday. I had replaced the spark plugs (the previous ones were a bit rusty with a gap of about .060" - I'm surprised the car ran) with appropriately gapped NGKs. I drove it around quite a bit yesterday and it ran fine. It had very little gas in the tank by the end of the day). This morning, I put about 5 ounces of Lucas injector cleaner in the tank and drove it about 200 yards down the street to the Lukoil gas station and filled the tank with 91 octane gas. I then drove about another 1 -2 miles and noticed I could smell some gas. I then lost power, and the dashboard went red along with the check engine light being lit. Fortunately I was able to roll into a parking lot. I tried to restart - nothing. The second time, the engine started and the the CEL happened again and it shut down. I could still smell gas. I tried again, the car ran fine. I let it run for a while and drove another several hundred yards to another parking lot and drove it around there. It seemed fine. I then did some shopping and 30 minutes later, I came out noticed the gas smell, checked everywhere and then decided to tighten the gas cap. I drove home the three miles - no problem, no check engine light.
I assume it was the gas cap. But will a reader provide me with a code for this past event?
thanks
Juan
