I have had a 94se and would not touch a 5 speed with the cable clutch, I went through 4 cables in 150k. The hydraulic units in 1998 and later cars are pretty good. My 00 9-3 at 169k needed a new clutch at 96k, other than that it has been good. I have driven several og 9-3's with the auto, and found it to be well suited to the car, and they are very reliable. I have an auto in my 04 9-5 aero and sport mode is very nice. As far as gas mileage my heavier 9-5 with a bigger engine gets 32 mpg highway, and the best I get with my 5spd manual 9-3 is 30,
I would be perfectly happy with an auto. Get a 2000-2002 model with the rev. 6 crankcase vent fix. My 00 has been the best car I have ever owned. And the hydraulic tops are soooo much better than the older electric ones.
