I bought a Bosch pump (made by Walbro) at Advanced Auto for $140. Also got the syphon pump from Harbor Freight for $6. The suction hose that came with the pump was not long enough to reach all the way to the tank from the filler neck. After getting a longer hose, I was able to reach liquid and pumped most of the gas out. But there was still about 1/4 tank remaining - the hose was plenty long but hit an obstruction in the tank so I couldn't insert it further to empty the tank. I tried jacking up the car one way and another and spend a couple of hours trying to empty the tank but didn't have complete success.
At this point I took a frustration break and then, since it was already on stands, I replaced the rear rotors and calipers. I took it off the stands and while giving it a test drive to bed in the new pads, the fuel pump failed for good, leaving me stranded in a parking lot near my house. Further rapping could not start the car so I abandoned it and walked home.
The next morning I was feeling too old to keep crawling under it to drop the tank so I gave up and AAA towed it to an indy shop. They just called and the fuel pump replacement, parts (pump only, not the assembly but also including filter) and labor is $550. So I had a chance to save about $400 in labor by doing it myself.
FYI, the indy has also quoted me $175 for coolant flush and new thermostat (declined), $90 for Mobil 1 oil change with my filter (also declined) and $75 to fix a valve cover leak (I'm gonna let them do this).
The indy dropped the exhaust system to get the tank out and now the flex pipe is gone, although being nearly 12 years old, it probably wasn't in good shape anyway. Looks like another two or three hundred for that too.
What makes me feel bad about this is not the money, since I haven't spent much on the car the last 8 years I've own it, but the fact that it's rusting around the rear wheel wells. I hate to spend money propping it up while it slowly turns into a rust bucket.
Have a nice day everyone - I'm smiling because I have a job and can afford to write the check.
