Short belt to avoid a/c compressor?

The a/c compressor is headed south on the '99 9-3. I can see the pulley wiggling.
I've read that you can circumvent the compressor with a shorter belt. Cash is tight at the moment and the weather is turning cold so I'd like to avoid doing the compressor.
What are people's experiences with using a short belt? Any reason it's not the way to go until spring?
