01 Vert Tonneau issues (long sorry)

I'm hoping I can get a little guidance from the experts on my convertible issues. I've read every Tonneau cover, universal joint, shear pin thread I could find and have learned tons from this site for both my Saabs. My convertible does the following
-Tonneau comes up (not far enough by an inch)
-First part of top bumps into but goes by the Tonneau
-The rest of the Top routine seems fine
-Tonneau Slams down kind of hard
Also, before all this started, a small piece of the Tonneau cover access flap broke first one side then the other.
The shear pin looks broken and one of the wings on the universal joint has broken away so obviously I need a new universal joint. The shear pin is still in there but I'm not going to run the top. So I'm wondering if replacing the universal joint is (1) DIY for RELATIVELY handy people and/or (2) do these symptoms indicate that there's more going on and the shear pin was just the part that broke because of something else. Or (3) should I just give the dealer my checkbook?
I know there's no way to tell exactly what's going on without the diagnostics but any information I can use would be helpful. Thanks in advance.
