More strange electrical behavior, '97 900S

Car was running poorly this morning. When (and only when) the fog lights are on, the engine temporarily skips a beat when changing from high beams to low. Happened every time I tested it. With fog lights off, nothing--ran normally. Then engine cut out as it has been intermittently doing; bing-bong and red dash light; then I noticed that the wiper blades worked but were really slow. The headlights also dimmed temporarily, perhaps for 2-3 seconds. All this over the course of about 5 minutes, not necessarily in rapid succession. Ran normally after that.
Throughout this winter, at distant intervals (perhaps a month) I've noticed the headlights dimming. Have also on a few other occasions had the same problem with the fog lights. Prior to this fall, never a strange electrical behavior.
I don't know if these events are related, but I'm wondering if folks here would lean toward ignition switch? At 215k, it's never been replaced. I took it to the shop and they thought it would be the crankshaft position sensor. The latter is a much less expensive repair, but I don't want to do it if not necessary.
Any input is welcome; thanks in advance.
