I coated the mating surfaces with copper anti-seize paste in addition to the clamp nuts/bolts. Both junctions are now leak-free. The anti-seize paste I used is rated to 1600 degrees farenheit.
Is there a specific reason to use muffler paste? The clamps I removed along with the old pipe seemed to be in fairly good shape, so I'm assuming that the new clamps should outlast the new intermediate pipe.
