Possible timing chain/sludge issue ?

Hi everyone, I have a particularly tough call to make about a 2000 9-3SE that my Sister-in law owns, heres the story:
She was driving down the highway, the engine dies and the oil light comes on. She and the person with her (not too car savy) pull off and check the oil, Its low so they add a quart, start it up again and drive it home (about 30+ miles). Only now its rattling bad and she is worried.
This is when my brother calls me up and tells me about it. I do a little reading and figure I should check the tensioner. I follow some forum posts on how to do it right (remove 12mm cap and spring first, then I pull out the whole tensioner). Measured it is WAY past 17mm, closer to 19mm.
I'm thinking lack of oil caused the guides to wear down and now it needs new guides. Is it an issue of sludge as well?
Thank you guys for any help/advice you can give, it is really appreciated!
