1996 900 SET / Auto Trans / 107k~ miles:
A few months ago I started hearing a noise while stopped and idling in gear, but as soon as I shift to neutral it would almost completely go away, but now it's starting to only partially go away when shifting to neutral. I checked all pulleys and they are fine (although the belt is sitting 1/3rd of the way off the tensioner pulley, even after replacement of tensioner assembly / pulley...) The water pump was recently replaced (at first I thought this was what was causing the noise as the pump was leaking and making a growling noise).
So last night I pulled the valve cover to check for sludge (thinking it may have been lifter noise) - did not find goopy sludge but I'm not really sure what I'm looking at as far as what's normal wear and tear.. Any thoughts on what the noise may be, or if any of these images show bad signs? Depending on the feedback here I'll be pulling the oil pan next oil change and if the inspection of that goes well I'll install an oil pressure gauge while I'm at it.
Any feedback? Thanks guys...
