So I had a similar issue with my ignition lock cylinder, where the cylinder would be stuck and not function properly. It was hard to remove the key and it ended up not wanting to start the engine.
While the WD40 worked to resolve my problems for a week or two, I don't think this is a good lubricant for the ignition cylinder. It ended up gunking up or moving all of the gunk inside the cylinder that had collected over time. Additionally, the WD40 is now likely soaking your ignition switch (which makes electrical connections to fire the engine, etc). I think ideally you are supposed to use lithium powder.
Anyway, I ended up having to buy a new lock cylinder since mine was totally ruined from the grime. I would recommend doing the same before you end up stuck somewhere.
