View what the others have said. Pads do need break in, but they are usually just less powerful, not noticably mushy.
FYI - you should flush the system anyway. Brake fluid does age. If you didn't crack the bleeders, use a power flush system or a hose with a jar and some fluid in it and you can flush without introducing air.
