The MIL (Check Engine) can be lit for some relatively minor things, yet the car will still perform adequately. The only way to know why the light is lit is to have the code(s) pulled and deciphered.
Most state inspection places (like NJ) won't even look at a car with the MIL illuminated, it's an automatic fail. They're not there to reset codes.
