Rough start - old issue, new clue

Previously posted in '10, but now a new clue:
2002 9-3 now at 88,000 miles.
For well over a year my 9-3 has had a starting problem but only under the following conditions: (1) engine off overnight for 12+ hrs; (2) warm or hot outside air temp (say, 70deg F or higher).
The engine stumbles or stalls on the first two or three start attempts, sometimes not catching at all on the first attempt. Once it's going, all is well including normal starts until the next overnight cycle.
I can usually prevent the initial stall by turning the key until I hear the fuel pump going for a few seconds, and turning it off without engaging the starter. After doing the forgoing "priming" cycles a couple of times the engine will start normally.
Here's the new clue: If I conduct the priming cycles but don't engage the starter motor at all, and come back a couple of hours later, then it starts normally. So it's as if the fuel system is loosing pressure overnight and then being repressurized.
Is it reasonable to conclude that the problem is with the check valve in the fuel line in which case the next step is to have my guy drop the tank and replace the valve (and maybe the fuel pump while he's at it)?
Could the problem possibly be with the fuel regulator, in which case it would be rational to replace that first?
Can the repessurization hypothesis be tested by hooking up a pressure testing gadget the night before, measuring the pressure in the morning, then starting her up?
Thanks
Kevin S
