As people have pointed out there are a few known "issues" that would leave you stranded... some you can easily carry a spare & replace easily on the side of the road (like a DIC), some that can be replaced side of the road if you really really want to (such as NSS) and others you really can't (fuel pump... but you can "influence" the life of the pump by how low you let the tank get... & I'm sure there is someone somewhere who has or would replace one side of the road).
Find a good indy Saab mechanic and spend the 1 or so hours of labor to have them check it out.
Saabs are well designed & built. The advantage of the 900/9-3 is that the basics of the car were used for a long time, so there is plenty of knowledge on the cars & issues, plenty of parts including re-builders and used, and by 98 the design was already 5 years old.
