My '01 9-3, also an automatic, has been making this noise on cold startup ever since I bought it. That was 40k miles and nearly 3 years ago. I've checked all sorts of things but never could determine what it was.

We've discussed this a few times on this board - see below for the last time it came up. I posted a recording of my car, and it sounds just like yours.

I also took my valve cover off a while back, and found the top end cleaner than I expected, so I haven't dropped the oil pan. I've replaced the vacuum lines and done the PCV #6 update.

I'm starting to give the turbo theory more merit. Originally when I listened with a stethoscope I heard the noise most loudly on the turbo bypass tube, compressor housing and wastegate actuator. I didn't think the turbo was bad though because it wasn't smoking on startup or whining under heavy boost. I had experienced those symptoms on a previous 9-3, but it never had this 'woo' noise.

Well guess what...just recently I did start seeing some blue smoke on startup. Maybe my turbo has been slowly dying all this time.
