B204 timing chain change

I am doing a head gasket on a friends 1994 900SE. It has 183K on it now. The tensioner is at 17-18mm and everything is original. It has had documented oil changes every 5K with synthetic since day one. The chain and guides look ok. Normal wear considering the mileage. No sludge or concerns about lube problems. I am considering just running it as I see posts of engines well over 200K on the original chain. The car will be down another week of two if I have to wait for parts (and thats been slow lately too).
Trouble is I am this far into it now...I have never attempted a chain/guide change in the car. Done a few of them on the engine stand. Is it possible? Looks like a real hassle if the front cover will even come off?
Is is possible to just cut the old chain and roll in a new one with a master link? At that point you still chance aging weak guides, BC parts etc.
It seems my options are either put it back together or pull out the engine and replace everything up front. Thoughts?
