Just did this job this weekend. Don't waste time with rope or any other "stuff" unless you don't have a choice. Use a compression tester/adapter and pressurize the cylinder and your done.
I just put the engine on #1 TDC so your cam/sprockets/crank marks all line up. Just so there is no doubt about timing later on after a few beers have been consumed...Mark the chain/cams if you like, although they are normally already marked links and cams when its all lined up properly. (It may take several revolutions to get it all lined up). Pull the sprockets/cams and go for it.
Pretty easy job so long as you don't lose any of those tiny damn valve retainer clips!!
