Oil consumption mystery Posted by Johnhcarter [Email] (#471) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Johnhcarter) on Wed, 18 Apr 2012 13:36:42 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I believe I have a valve stem oil seal problem. The engine is a non-turbo 2.3 1995 900S. I had the head done at a local shop and I supplied the new valve stem oil seals which I bought from Eeuroaprts. I've been using a quart of oil every 300 miles since having the head done. The engine did not use hardly a drop of oil prior to doing the head. I only did the head because I took the engine out to replace all the accessories and install a hydraulic clutch.
The only thing that makes sense is that the valve stem seals have all failed or that they we not put in properly or maybe not at all, unless there is some other thing that is causing the radical loss of crankcase oil.
I did a leak down test on the engine before doing the head and the leak down test showed no problems. I just did a compression test and found each cylinder at 165 psi. However, all of the plugs had a lot of carbon. All plugs looked the same.
Could this be a problems with the pcv system? If it were the pcv system where would I look?
I've talked with the machine shop about the problem. They are willing to work with me and are willing to consider they may have made a mistake. However, they say it is hard to remove a valve stem seal without destroying the seal. I have never done this particular thing so I cannot determine if they are being honest.
Has anyone had any experience with new seals being bad? I find it hard to believe all seals would be bad. The only thing that makes any sense is that they forgot to install the seals or that the problem is something else. I don't consider the oil rings as a source as the engine was not using oil before the work and I did not remove the pistons from a the block. Also, I was using Mobile 1 for a couple years prior to the work with no loss of oil from leaks or consumption.
Any thoughts?
