Have you tried opening up the shift lever? There should be a way to pop off part of it, and maybe then you can get enough parts out of your way to proceed.
Another thing you could try is to disconnect the shifter cable at the transmission. Be aware that it might take some work to reach it down in the engine bay. Here are some notes from when I replaced the neutral safety switch on my 2001, along with linked instructions for an earlier model with photos. I remember that once the cable was disconnected, the shift lever flopped around loosely.
There is still the question of the solenoid that normally releases when you have the key on and press the brake pedal. Maybe that's what the little release button is for, but I don't know if there's anything else that would prevent you from moving the lever.
