fueling issues

Recently, without warning, I started my '95 900 and it was immediately rough and barely ran, until I revved it up a little. Then it ran well again until I had to fill the tank. I tried to pump fuel into the tank but found I had to pump VERY SLOWLY, because the fuel would back up and spill out as if the tank was full. In fact, it was seemingly half empty but could only be receptive to additional fuel if I pumped VERY slowly, as in trickle. Then
it would register 3/4 full tank, when in fact there could be no more fuel added without it spilling out of the filler and on my feet. Then the gauge said 3/4 full maximum. I never had any trouble with this issue in the past. I was worried that someone had put something into the filler or the tank because I can only pump on a trickle or the pump nozzle at the service station will shut off.
Has anyone had such an issue in the past? The car otherwise runs just fine as always.
