Noise when turning wheel--loose belt?

OK, so I brought the car ('97 900S non-turbo) into the mechanics re: the noise that comes when turning the wheel and AC is on. I can induce the noise from the front of the engine when I turn the wheel all the way to the right and all the way to the left (especially with the last quarter turn of steering wheel and can hold onto the noise if I keep it turned at the max in either direction). The mechanic thinks it is not power steering pump (Pentosin CHF-17 fluid level is at max) nor the pulley bearings (their justification is that the noise would be constant and not only when turning). He thinks it is the belt that is at issue (Goodyear Gatorback 6PK2465 4060970 with idler pulley bypass). He poured water directly onto the belt while I turned the steering wheel to produce the noise and the noise stopped for a while. The belt is apparently loose--is there a tensioner that he can adjust--he seems to think the belt system is "self-adjusting" so not possible to make it tighter (he's not a SAAB specialist). Also, what is an alternative "better-fitting" belt that I can use (with idler pulley bypass)? Any thoughts? TIA!
