Thanks - I'm pretty sure the banana remote is just for lock/unlock and the transponder needed to start the car is in the key itself. I'm not sure about compatibility between the early keys and the newer designs that have the remote built in.
We have two local Saab dealers that can do the programming if we can find an appropriate key blank with transponder somewhere (they don't have any left). Not sure if the locksmith ("dumb") blanks have a place inside for the transponder, if so you could always put one in from a used key. (If not maybe duct tape a transponder to the key head - ugly but it might work!)
Fortunately my own Saabs are old enough that I don't have electronic keys to worry about, but I'm trying to help my friend out since he is new to Saab ownership. We'll have to check with Sports Car Service in Delaware that you mentioned, that's close enough that we can drive out there if they have parts and can do the job.
