Usually the problem you describe is caused by a low charge of freon. What happens is, the evaporator freezes up then the system shuts down to prevent damage. Going by the pressure alone is a hard thing to do because the pressure can vary based on the outside temp. Turn the a/c and look at the viewing glass on the receiver/ dryer. If it looks milky then you're low on charge. It should be clear inside there. The system not taking freon could be a simple fix like a clogged schrader valve.
