The part I would be concerned about is the oil pickup passage. If you properly sealed that along with the pan and let it cure properly, then you might be fine. I just finished this on my Viggen and also replaced the o-ring inside the pickup tube. It was in OK shape, but had quite a few cracks in it so putting it back in was out of the question.
I think the issue with a thicker sealant is that the gap between the pan and the block is larger, which means a greater chance that a gap might develop in the oil pickup passage causing the oil pump to pull air. Not good at all, of course. I used 518 on the pan plus sprayed the block surface with activator. When the pan is tight, there is literally no gap to speak of, which is how it is designed.
I believe the blue RTV would be more appropriate on a flexible pan, not a cast aluminum one. But I am not a mechanic by trade, just my 2 cents.
