2000 9-3 Shifting woes. Need some sage advice :-/ Posted by Nicholas [Email] (#2995) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Nicholas) on Mon, 7 Jan 2013 19:33:32 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Shifting is giving me major headaches again, and the problem seems to again be puzzling.
Wife drives the car, and wound up stuck on the roadside, unable to shift into any gears with car running. Had the car towed, and when I first started the car (with gear in first), I was able to drive forward as usual , and so was she. For some reason , I could then also shift into all the other gears (besides reverse which is always a problem) with the car idling and clutch engaged .
So, I went to "shifter adjustment" again, which I am now finding quite confusing. I'm not sure on the "hole lineup" , or how the stick should be adjusted both side to side and front to back.
Long story short, after two hours of constantly loosening and tightening the bolt , while I was holding the stick at various positions, I seem to have made the problem worse. I can quite easily get the adjustment to the point where I can easily shift 1-4 (for some reason not 5) with the engine off. However, when I tried turning the engine on with the gear in first, there was a bad noise and a bad smell. This problem was entirely new and kind of shocking, and had something to do with my alignment efforts on the shifter.
Is this for sure a bad clutch? I know most people jump to that, and when I had this problem a year ago, that's what I was told. Then I messed around with the shifter alignment and somehow got it shifting again. Also, I'm puzzled as to it being the clutch when I could engage and release the clutch in first, before I started messing with that confusing and difficult shifter adjustment.
Could the linkage be bad, and if so, how could I tell? This clutch and slave are "allegedly" new as of about 50K miles ago after a complete engine rebuild. Car is driven very little nowadays, and like I said, I have had this same problem in the past which I was then able to fix with the shifter alignment.
Thanks for any ideas, or any way to determine if in fact there is a clutch problem, because as I understand it , replacing the clutch or slave on this car is about as bad as blown up engine, which has already been done. Unbelievable. :(
