Hello All
It's been ten years since the Saabnet last saved my bacon. When I started making my '99 9-3SE perfect for me. I now need some advice /info /opinions to help me heal my wounded Saab and my Snaab heart. I own a 1999 9-3SE with 140k miles. My roadmate, love of my life. Finally got it nearly perfect by any measure. Completely perfect for me. Still made driving fun, even on bad trips. You all know. Haven't found anything newer I like enough to trade.
Long story short, caught some guy breaking into my garage at 3am. He ran. Nobody around, I jumped in the Saab while calling 911, to see where he went and get a better description to give police. Hot on him, I apexed a corner and suddenly his "lookout" in an older Suburban blindsides me, coming across an intersection and two lanes in the wrong direction, hit my left rear and pinned my right front against the curb, continuing to push to keep me from getting away and catching their boy. They fire two shots in the air. I duck. I couldn't see them clearly over my left shoulder, but the sounds said I was outnumbered and out gunned. A few seconds later they drive off. Nobody around, I limped it 1/4 mile home to get off the street, out of sight, a bigger gun and my blood pressure pills. I live in Memphis. It was just my turn. Enough said.
I'm alive. I survived my turn. I drove it home! But it hurt my Saab.
The right front is bent but got me home. Damage is confined to right front wheel/ suspension/ drive components from curb impact directly to the wheel. Serpentine belt came off intact from tire debris. Tire and rim are shredded. I drove it approx 100 yards with the donut on it. Some noise, small fluid leak initially and pre catalyic exhaust noise. The left rear is just body work. Mechanically sound.
Here's the thing. I recently purchased a 1996 900 convertible v6.120k miles Nice car other than the timing belt broke. I bought it cheap enough for small parts for my 9-3 if engine damage is too severe to cost effectively resuscitate the timing belt damage.
My initial questions are:
1) Is the 900 worth repairing the damage from the timing belt? Never even driven a v6 non-turbo Saab. How does the 900 convertible compare to my 9-3 and measure up to Saabs in general?
2) What is normally involved / damaged from a broken timing belt on the non turbo v6?
3)If better to use the 900 for parts, is there a resource to know which parts from the 1996 900 will work on the 1999 9-3? Specifically, how much of the right front, suspension, etc. will work toward getting my 9-3 back on the road?
That's my Saab crime adventure dilemma. I miss driving my Saab every day. My better half has made it clear that I need to revive my Saab cost effectively or she wants a new car. Yeah, it just keeps getting worse.
Any advice, direction, insight, experiences and opinions to help me get back behind the wheel of a Saab would be greatly appreciated.
Thankyaverymuch (the Memphis ultimate gesture of gratitude) in advance for consideration and patience for this protracted post.
Ted
