FWIW, I had this problem on my '01 and elected to put on a short belt while I prepared to replace the pulley bearing. I got a kit with the new bearing, clutch disc and electromagnet, only to find during installation that the pulley itself was cracked! There are 5 'spokes' across the face of the pulley where it's slotted, and all but 1 of the spokes were cracked right through. The bearing wasn't in bad shape, so I realized I was actually seeing the pulley flexing back and forth and making noise whenever it hit the clutch disc.
I tried but failed to find the pulley (not sold separately) or a used compressor from various junkyards, so I put on the new electromagnet and buttoned everything else back up until I figured it out. After a few unpleasantly hot months, I ended up trading the car in without ever fixing it. Still have the brand new bearing and clutch disc (plus used electromagnet) that I'd sell for a good price...
Anyway, I hope your problem is more easily fixable than mine was, but yes - put on the short belt instead of worrying about what horrible things could happen if the bearing seized or the pulley cracked right in two!
