LED turn signal bulbs instead of incandescents?

Hello,
Has anyone tried using LED turn signal bulbs instead of incandescents?
I believe that they would last longer and run cooler, but I'm wondering on the luminescence and tripping a warning light on my dash.
Also, would I have to wire in a resistor to the LED bulbs?
I would like to have clear turn signal bulbs (that activate "amber") that last longer and run cooler, without looking "Japanese" (no offense intended.
Thanks,
George
