I did the tapping on the fuel pressure regulator thing, and for 20 miles all seemed well - pressure would increase on acceleration, car ran fine. Then I parked, pressure had remained at 40psi on my return, engine fired right up, and fuel pressure dropped steadily until engine died at 20psi. Ran a wire from the battery directly to the pump terminal, and the pump hummed gently, but no change at all in fuel pressure. Had to be towed home.
