Synthetic > synthetic blend > non synthetic.
I believe they recommended synthetic, but IF Saab says to run a synthetic blend, they are essentially saying to run that or better (i.e. synthetic).
Synthetic isn't even that expensive, so for me, I see no reason to skimp. You have a sludge-prone engine, and it also happens to be a turbo, so not only is it harder on your oil, but it is also more sensitive to the degradation of that oil. It's cheap peace of mind IMO.
To the point of what the others said about diesel oil, it's not a bad thing to think about (though definitely not necessary). The diesel oil has looser restrictions in certain areas, and as a result, has not been required to remove zinc and other high-pressure lubricants from their mix. This is a plus (if anything) for things like our cams and followers, since they are a non-roller design... but still I haven't heard about any high rates of wear on these parts.
Hope that helps!
