I think removing the sump is a good idea. Yes, I say remove the sump first thing and decide based on the condition of the rod bearings and main bearing caps if you want to put money into repairs. If the main bearings show damage from oil starvation then you may not be able to save the engine without removal and complete rebuild. Hopefully you will find the main bearings acceptable. Once you have the sump off replacing the rod bearings is a must. I feel confident they need replaced given your statements about oil pressure.
