I had a '97 900 non turbo and now a '99 9-3 SE. I much prefer the 9-3 turbo over the 1997. In addition to performance and improvements to the interior the car has a more solid feel to it. However on both cars I had top problems. The 1997 tonneau cover would not close completely due to elastic in the top being old and frayed. The elastic needs to be firm in order to pull the top down into the boot. Otherwise it sticks up and the tonneau cover can't completely close. The 1999, which now use hydraulics, takes a couple of button pushes, in order to fully retract. I think the hydraulics are a little weak ( word choice for lack of better knowledge). Consequently, the timing is slightly off and so the soft top control generates an error. Still I prefer them to the electrical motors on the 1997. Either way, if you are going to spend that much money, make sure the top is impeccable.
