It probably isn't the fuel pump then. Odds are it's something else--noises can sort of migrate and sound like they're coming from one place when they're coming from another. Or it could be coming from that area but not be what you think. It could even be a combination of things. You need to keep plugging away until you find out exactly what it is--don't just keep replacing parts. It might have to get worse before you find out what it is. The noise could drown out the normal hum of the pump. Check the pump relay and wiring for a good connection. You did change the fuel filter I hope? It could be a DIC starting to go bad intermittently--the rough running could cause some harmonic thing with the exhaust, or a loose brake line, or who knows. Weird noises can have you chasing your tail. Seeing if you can get it into the noise mode when it's on a lift. Buy an automotive stethoscope--might help you find it.
