I recommend removing the headliner. It was a good education for me. I'm impressed with the design. It appears to me if the drains are not plugged and the o-rings are not leaking then a lot of water can come into the system around the hatch seal and none should end up in the interior. If you're not familiar with the plastic fasteners that hold up the aft portion of the liner they turn 1/4 turn with a flat screw driver and then can be removed. My biggest reason for removing the headliner was the fabric had fallen away from the headliner moulding. Careful not to bend the liner moulding too sharply or you might get a break or permanent crease.
Not too bad a job just takes patience and removing a lot of little plastic parts.
