No one needs 10W-40 unless they live in the tropics. It's obsolete. Most wear is at startup, where that 10W is very thick to get moving, especially in cold weather. A 10W is thicker cold than your 40 weight is hot.

0W-40 is good oil but it is on the light side of 40 weight in order to get teh cold side down to the 0W, so it's thin. The small molecular size means that some cars use a lot of oil when they use 0W-40. Otherwise, the 0W is what everyone really needs.

Switch to a quality 5W-40. No consumption worries, and much less wear at startup.
