Hello,
You should only loose about the quart because there is a oil thermostat in the filter housing which opens when it reaches temperature allowing oil to go to the cooler. So make sure you check the oil level after running the engine up to full operating temperature. Because the level will drop after the oil cooler refills.
The old bulletin for engine replacements due to sludge had a procedure for for the initial oil change after installing the engine before returning the car. You would run the car at about 2500 rpm until the cooling fans kicked on then run it for another 10 minutes at that engine speed. This was suppose to get the oil hot enough to open the thermostat and get any debris out of the oil cooler. Good Luck, Bernie at George Riggin Specialty Automotive
