I'm pretty sure the answer to your question is you do not have to change the key. The electric part of the assembly is below and separate from the key part. You need to disassemble the the shifter and console to get the switch out. I left my shifter connected on my standard shift. It was more difficult that way. I would disconnect from the engine if I do another switch replacement as it will allow more movement of the console. Good luck finding a good price on the part. I recall I just saw a price of 300+!
