What we have to stop thinking of is that one design of engine of good quality leads to another and better design and quality engine (or car).
You can have a near bullet proof engine (or parts of and engine) one year and they completely screw it up the next generation.
Worn out timing chains and guides were almost non existent on the B202 and 234 engines. B234 had some balance shaft issues a few years here and there.
But the B205/235 engines wore out the chain and guides in no time but luckily, it rarely leads to destruction since it is just about no stories of failed timing chains in the later cars.
Saab even changed the measurements from 11 to 15mm allowed. Probably to cut down on the warranty work.
