I find it easier to loosen all 8 nuts on manifold but leave it on head and then snake it all off the turbo studs and being very careful not to crack any of the two timing chain guides in the process.
If for some lucky reason all 4 studs comes out of the turbo instead of just the nuts coming off, I remove the manifold first.
The plane of the turbo flange is not in perfect line with the plane of engine deck so therefore it does not work well to leave the manifold nuts tight but you have to have them loose so you can wiggle the head off the turbo and engine at the same time.
