The only way I can "manage" to determine if a air mass meter is bad is to install a good used one or a new genuine one.
Any other ways including reading and believing fault codes or trying with some rebuilt or cheap Chinese knock off parts are a pure chance taking.
So hopefully the shop had a good used one they plugged in and it worked.
Since your car is a two year only air mass meter (94-95) it might be difficult to find but I would try to find a genuine or Bosch or good used one first before trying any of the other exotic ways.
