You don't use your wrench on the exhaust cam, you use it on the intake cam carefully tighten the chain so that it is taught from crank sprocket, over exhaust sprocket and intake sprocket leaving all the slack where the tensioner guide is.
So the best is to over advance the engine crankshaft slightly and then back it back to TDC by pulling on the intake cam. If one of the cams are not in line, you can "walk" the chain one tooth at the time before the tensioner is installed.
You are not alone, there are thousands of "professional" mechanics out there that have gotten it wrong too.
