oil pressure light, possible issues

2001, 117k mi. Oil pressure light came on. Perhaps foolishly drove last 2 miles home and checked oil. Level seemed good but not topped off. Added half qt. Light went off and slight tick, tick noise in engine goes away, but comes back on after a few miles. I made the error of thinking this was the oil level (not pressure) light. Have I likely done damage to engine? Thoughts on what the problem is? Is it worth checking anything else before the expense of accessing oil pan? Can car be driven in its current state, when adding oil turns light off and stops tick tick noise? Thank you for your input.
