You are correct in that it's about not changing the oil often enough, but I wouldn't think for one minute that the oil itself is the problem.
These motors aren't easy on oil... the cat is directly under the oil pan (you WILL see evidence of heat when you drop the pan, it looks like the oil got fried a little), they have a marginal PCV system at best (even with the latest #6 version), and of course flowing through a hot turbo doesn't help either. That's why I change my oil at 3k miles. SaabProb didn't say what the OCI's were for the history of the car, but I'm willing to bet they were over that. He also didn't say when the PCV system was updated (if ever). I would use the oil if I were him
