Likelihood of engine sludge? Posted by Alfaron [Email] (#1595) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Alfaron) on Wed, 21 Sep 2016 19:25:35 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I recently purchased a 2001 Saab 9-3 SE with a B205R engine and a five speed transmission. Although 15 years old it has only 68,000 miles. I tracked down the original and only owner and he was gracious enough to share its service records from day one.
The car had 34 oil changes at the dealer during his 68,000 mile history. This is an average of one oil change every 2000 miles. The good thing is the 2000 oil change interval. The not so good things are the dealer used semi synthetic oil for about half the changes and conventional oil for the other half, and the car was primarily used for urban transportation, to and from work. The PCV update was done in 2009.
An independent Saab mechanic (new to me as my 13 year Saab mechanic died last year) is pretty much demanding that the oil pan be pulled and the oil pickup be inspected. I am reluctant to do this because of the cost. The current mechanic that I am taking it to has good reviews on Angie's list.
What are the chances that the engine is sludged? Will pulling the valve cover reveal sludge if there is any or does it have to be the pan? What about a borescope?
Your advice is needed.
