I just did the repair. There were no instructions with my kit either.
The metal bracket is intended to secure the circuit tape to the circuit board. I got the unit with the new LCD unit, and the tape was already attached to it with a metal clip. I had to take the metal clip off and put it on the other way up, but it seems to work.
On mine the circuit tape is held to the circuit board just with a strip of scotch tape that you provide. Once the circuit tape is in place, apply the foam strip to the top, and with a sharp knife or awl, poke through the foam to make a way for the little machine screws. Install them so the nuts are on the side with the little metal piece, or they will interfere when the back of the unit is reinstalled.
Also, there was no way to apply the yellow paper to the back of the new LCD unit, so I just taped it in place on the white plastic bit that holds the LCD unit.
When I put mine back in the car, it worked fine, so their kit does work, but the lack of instructions is poor form.
I've added a link to a more complete set of instructions for the SID unit, but how the scotch tape is used is shown.
