To respond to your e-mail, I'm confident the modern lithium ion chemistries would have no problems starting a car. For example, you can purchase an IMR (Li-Mn) 18650 cell that can handle up to 40A. So even just 10 of them would probably be able to start the car no problem (from a power perspective). So I wouldn't get to caught up in that, specifically. The bigger issue is capacity, as a typical 18650 cell might only have 2.5Ah of capacity, and the issue of matching the voltages. Most likely we will soon see modern cars move to a different system voltage.
If you REALLY want the answer to the current required to start a car, I believe you would need to install a shunt resistor in series with the battery and do some real world measurements. Starter motor age, oil viscosity, temperatures, etc. will matter a lot. If you could establish a test rig with a small data logger device, you could go around to friends and family and get some real data. Then you'd be on your way, I think.
