my 2000 Viggen has a similar issue albeit not as bad - the hole for the top of the shock has doubled in size so there is a little lateral play feasibly. my mechanic created a washer with a flange that centres the shock.
i've had to have all new rear brake lines installed and the axle etc is quite rusty as well, so it may be a common problem in this model of car.
how bad is the rust in the remainder of the rear end of your car?
i was poking around the web and did come across photos of a car that had extensive reinforcing done at the shock mount area but i dont recall where the photos were. keep searching and you might come across them.
worst case scenario you're going to have to sell the car or part it out or strip it for your own stock of parts and find another!
