Problem with shift ball ring and spring 03 CV

I can't seem to find much info on how the little plastic retaining ring that holds the shifter down in the ball socket works. Mine popped out, leaving me struggling with only 1-3-5. When I lifted the shift boot out I saw the ring had worked loose, and the spring was also just sitting there.
The instructions I found simply say to tighten the ring clockwise and to make sure the spring is attached, but they don't show HOW or WHERE the spring is attached - and for that matter, WHY it needs a spring?
Is the purpose of the spring to hold clockwise tension on the ring but still allow it to rotate anti-clockwise a bit when needed? Seems like dumb design instead of just putting a lock ping of some kind in there. I mention this because it appears this has been taken apart before, and the spring is obviously stretched.
I'm pretty sure If I put the ring back in, I could fashion a pin of some kind to prevent the ring from rotating backwards again, but I don't want to if that's not how its supposed to work. I'm just surprised I can't find more information about this anywhere or even any good pictures.
