Castrol Syntec is better than Castrol petroleum base oil.
Stick with the 10W-30.
When you look at the specs, and at the real life use-- Syntec is not as good as AMSOIL, Mobil 1, Redline. but it isn't going to cause you any problems.
If you aren't planning to extend the drain interval, then you don't need to flush before using. Just plan to change the first batch after 3,000 miles or so. If you note a sudden increase in oil consumption after 1,000 miles or so, change the oil filter and top off.
Last year, Castrol reformulated Syntec and started using a hydro-cracked petroleum base stock rather than the PAO stock they formerly used.
Mobil took them to the advertising council, and the decision was that since there was some molecular change involved (and since there is no definition of "synthetic"), Castrol could call the product synthetic.
(They did agree to drop a bunch of other claims). According to Chevron (which also makes PAO), the hydrocracked base stock doesn't perform nearly as well in extreme cold.
